Charity Update - Donations, FUnds, and our Mission

Our charity’s mission is “To raise money and awareness for children affected by Type 1 Diabetes with the ultimate goal of finding a cure.” 

Over the past few years, our Owen’s Heroes charity has raised money through several avenues;  two Owen’s Heroes hosted tournaments in Tampa, our Owen’s Heroes World Series team that played together in 2023, the original travel lacrosse team in 2020, the annual JDRF Tampa Walk, and other direct donations from family and friends.

The majority of the funds raised over the years has gone to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and continues to sponsor children to attend Diabetic Camps across Florida.  This past summer we sponsored several kids to attend the Florida Diabetic Summer Camp.   Owen also had a chance to attend the camp.  It was a five-night sleep away camp that is attended only by children with Type 1.  The charity has sponsored several kids for this camp along with a few that attended the Teen camp in Ocala.

Not only has the charity done a great job of raising funds, but we have also raised a tremendous amount of awareness:

• Our Instagram has over 700 followers, and we often receive messages from other children that are type 1 diabetic asking for an opportunity to play with our lacrosse team or sharing how happy it made them to see a lacrosse team dedicated to this mission.
• You can’t go to a Tampa lacrosse practice or Florida tournament without seeing Owen’s Heroes shirts, hats, helmets, etc.  And most of the gear specifically says “Cure T1D”
• We were featured on 10 Tampa Bay news for three segments.  (Click Link Below for Videos)
• At  the World Series this Summer, our team was welcomed and truly       celebrated.  They gave Owen the Team Captain award and called him on       stage in front of a massive crowd… and CHANTED his name! (Click Link Below for Videos)

This year, we will be once again sponsoring kids and teens to attend Summer, Winter, and sport diabetic camps across Florida and are always open to ideas and suggestions on how to best use the funds we raise.  

We are also in the planning process of doing our 3rd Tampa Owen’s Heroes tournament in Tampa in early 2024.
